Drawing Mechanisms

My intent for the piece was to create a new form of “Painting tool”. Artists have used paintbrushes and pencils to create their work for millennia, and as a result, the marks they create have become predictable. By exploring new ways of making marks, my machine is able to create art in unexpected ways.

The artworks produced by each performance are similar, but each is unique because of the incredible number of variables present during their creation. The rate and order I fill the top reservoir, the amount of color in the second level, and the length of time the painting is left to dry all have an effect on the end product. In this way, I have control over the result. At the same time however, my system also operates through chaos. Sometimes colored water misses the container below it or it splashes in uncontrollable ways. Because of this, the piece provokes the question of who or what is actually the artist, the man or the machine.
